PREVENTING THE MILIZARTIZATION
OF SPACE AND SAFEGUARDING
PEACE BEYOND EARTH
The FDISEC committee, titled "Preventing the Militarization of Space and Safeguarding Peace Beyond Earth," usually represents the United Nations First Committee in Model United Nations (MUN) simulations. This committee is officially called the United Nations General Assembly First Committee (DISEC).
Under this name, FDISEC (Foreign Policy and Disarmament International Security Committee) focuses on international security, disarmament, and peace issues. In the context of "Preventing the militarization of space and safeguarding extraterrestrial peace," the committee addresses the risks that might arise from countries using space for military purposes. These risks include satellite weapons, anti-satellite tests (ASAT), space-based missile systems, and the potential for an arms race in space. The committee also reviews the current international legal framework. One of the most important agreements in this area is the Outer Space Treaty. This treaty encourages the peaceful use of space and bans the placement of nuclear weapons in space. However, due to today’s advancing technologies, this agreement may no longer be enough. This is a topic of ongoing discussion.
Delegates in the FDISEC committee aim to propose new rules to limit arms in space, develop measures to build trust between countries, strengthen international cooperation, and create solutions to ensure the sustainable and peaceful use of space. In summary, this committee seeks to prevent space from becoming a battlefield and to keep it a shared and peaceful space for all humanity.
